Volunteers Week: Lesley's Volunteering Story

Lesley has fulfilled several voluntary roles over the last five years. She started as a volunteer driver and then supported the office once a week to help with allocating drivers.

Just before the lockdown in 2021, she also took on a specific role befriending a lady in Bunny, near where she lived.

“I retired from library services in 2011 after 30 years, so I am used to mixing with people,” said Lesley. “I do volunteer driving as and when I choose and am happy to cover weekends. I just think what a nightmare it must be for people who have previously been independent and living a full life, to have to rely on others.”

Lesley is encouraging people who already have fairly busy lives to add the element of volunteering.

“People think they might be put upon, but they don’t yet realise how rewarding it is – some people you work with are so interesting. Just try it – until you do, you don’t know how it will make you feel – give yourself the chance to get along with new people and have a good laugh.”
