Rushcliffe Befriends is aimed at over 50s living within the Rushcliffe area who feel lonely and socially isolated and would like some company for a few hours a week.

The scheme covers two types of Befriending:

Community Befriending  
One to One Befriending

The scheme has been very successful and has received some excellent feedback from both clients and the volunteers who help us.

The following case study illustrates just one example of the tremendous difference the scheme can make to someone’s life:

An unexpected change in her circumstances meant that Mrs W found herself living alone for the first time in years. Adjusting to this change presented inevitable challenges for her, challenges which were further compounded by a recent spell in hospital. Feeling increasingly lonely and low in confidence, Mrs W was hoping to make positive steps to help her come to terms with her new situation. She was eager to reduce her loneliness and find some new things to do to enable her to become more involved with in her local community. Mrs W was introduced to volunteer J in May 2015. J applied to volunteer for Rushcliffe Befriends because it was an activity he felt he could make a difference in and get a lot out of. Having retired from the Civil Service a few years ago, he felt ready to take on a voluntary role which would give him the opportunity to contribute something towards the community. Mrs W and J attended a dancing class together a number of times which gradually saw Mrs W “come out of her shell and show another side”. After attending 8 dancing sessions together, Mrs W’s confidence had grown and she is now continuing to attend on her own
